Be More Awesome Than Last Year.

Yo! 2017! Lookin’ good…

A favourite pastime in the Show Works office is a trip down memory lane via blog. Every year or so we like to take a wander through our posts, giggle at how witty we were, and wonder at how the year ahead will write itself out. Our recent visit to the blog was a rather disappointing affair. 2016 does not read well at Two, lonely little blog posts representing 365 days in the life of Show Works. Why, did this happen? Why did we so horribly fail at our 2016 resolution (write more blog posts)? Two reasons really – it was quiet, and it was busy. When it was quiet, we spent very much time trying to get work (read here for how we did this), and just as we finished penning a blog about how quiet things were, (see previous link again) things got BUSY MANIC INSANE CRAZY RUN OFF OUR FEET ABSOLUTELY FANTASIC. And then it was Christmas. 5 months of mayhem, not a sausage of a moment to memorialize it by blogpost.

So, before we get going on 2017 (which is looking great so far – more on that later), lets quickly jot down what happened in the second half of 2016….

PenBev and Pick n Pay kept us busy in July. We created a hip-hop and happening breakdancing and beat-boxing show (say that 10 time fast!) for the Coca-Cola Holiday Happiness Zone and assisted with entertainment and show calling at the Pick n Pay Franchisee Conference. We also sent the Stig to the Momentum Sales Awards. Oh yes, didn’t you know? We know the Stig personally. He’s cool. Absquatulent, some might say.

In August we worked on the Sanlam Women’s day events and created a Discovery Networks VR experience at the Mindshare Huddle in Jozi. We also spent much of the month brainstorming a murder mystery challenge for the NBCU Screening of the new Universal Channel show Cape Town – based on the novel Dead Before Dying by Deon Meyer. We went deep with this one, creating convoluted case files, crafty crime scenes, convincing alibis and an incredible murder mystery event at the magnificent Casa Enigma in Camps Bay.

September was a biggie, with the TLC’s Next Great Presenter Bootcamp – 13 contestants from all over Africa, flown to Cape Town for a week long Bootcamp where they were whittled down to our Top 3 Finalists by our panel of judges. Bootcamp was an exhausting, exhilarating week, and we loved meeting these special individuals and helping them to chase their dreams! Read more here…

Then it was straight into the NBCU Upfront event. This was a super fun event, with a horse racing theme, and guests went all out betting on the NBCU horses and enjoying the stunning venue at Waterfall Polo estate. Check out the event…

No time to rest, we headed off to JHB to stage manage the Multichoice Africa Long Service Awards.

Aaaaand…then we headed into our Discovery Networks Upfront week…with 2 huge events in 8 hours, with a 2 hour turn around in between…it was a big ask…but we did it! The TLC Next Great Presenter Live Reveal show was filmed, and Carissa Cupido was announced as the winner – well done Carissa! Then, that same evening, the Discovery Networks Upfront event was a big highlight on our calendar, with a ‘late night show’ theme, awesome talent and loads of fun interactions, not to mention a killer after-party! It didn’t stop there, with a client dinner for Allot Communications, rehearsals for the Direct Axis year end function and the TOP 30 Day for Anchor Yeast, as well as the SA leg of the global world premier screening of the new series “Mariah’s World” on E! Entertainment! More on Mariah here…

We wrapped up the year with Santa and his elves at the V&A Waterfront and retired to the beach to remember how to breathe again.

2016 – what a beaut!

2016 at a glance

Now… 2017. Things are looking good. We are busy busy busy working on some big events in the next few months, including the Worldsport Music Run, the annual event-of-the-year E! Africa Party, and the massive Pick n Pay Corporate Conference in Sun City in May. We are also assisting our favourite events company Mela with show calling and stage management at their next two big events (Show Calling – what’s that you ask? Ah ha! Next blog coming up) and are in the strategy stages of Discovery Networks next big campaign.

Despite this blessed busy-ness, we promise you dear blog that we will write more and visit often. It is our new year’s resolution to achieve last year’s new years resolution. Let’s do this thing!
