HGTV South Africa Channel Launch Events

Show Works assisted Discovery Networks with conceptualising and executing a fully-immersive 3 day media event for the new Home & Garden TV Channel, HGTV, launching on DSTV in July.

Media, clients and Multichoice executives from South Africa were joined by Discovery executives from the US, Dubai and Amsterdam, as well as international press and talent for a 3 day plunge into the world of HGTV!

The majority of the guests stayed at the Table Bay Hotel, and Show Works co-ordinated all logistics and transfers, including daily room drops with teasers and information about the activities to come, as well as co-ordinating four spectacular events across the 3 days.

Our welcome cocktail party on the first evening was hosted at the home of architect Stefan Antoni – a design and architectural masterpiece. This incredible house, with it’s 360’views across the ocean was the perfect venue to host a classy and elegant cocktail event to toast the start of the week’s activities. With HGTV themed food, molecular cocktails and a fun “scene in a bubble” performance-art installation, guests mingled and chatted whilst enjoying the beautiful setting sun.

The next day was the official launch event itself. Hosted at Silverline Studios at the Waterfront, guests were given workers aprons and hardhats and collected at the hotel by a JCB that lead the shuttles to the event – just the first taste of the adventures of the day!

After a presentation and Q&A with Discovery execs and talent, Tarek El Moussa from HGTV’s hit show, Flip Or Flop, our teams were given their challenge for the day. Teams were each given an empty room that they had 90 minutes to design, decorate and dress to their heart’s content. The studio area was set up with a Dulux Paint Department, a DIY department, a Gardening Department and with piles of furniture, décor, paintings and art, plants, even windows and curtains – more than enough to create a living space to be proud of! And they really lived up to the challenge – all 6 of the rooms were absolutely amazing! It was so much fun to see our creative concept for this come to life, as guests really threw themselves into the challenge!

After the room makeovers, guests sat down to enjoy a gourmet “builder’s lunch” served to them in wooden toolboxes, before the prizegiving and announcement of the judge’s favourite room makeover.

The day’s adventure didn’t end there – the launch day was followed by a stunning gala dinner at the Zeitz MOCAA. After a private museum tour, guests dined in the museum’s rooftop venue, with entertainment by Acoustic Element, and a gourmet 3-course dinner, surrounded by the twinkling city lights of Cape Town.

Day 3 dawned, and we headed off to the gorgeous Grand Provence Wine Estate nestled in the Franschhoek wine region for an HGTV screening. Guests were invited to an exclusive mini-viewing of 3 episodes of HGTV’s top rated shows, before heading in to the wine cellar for wine tasting and to blend their own wines. After the wine experience, a delicious wine-paired lunch was served.

After 3 days of immersive activities, HGTV programming, and experiencing some of the best that Cape Town has to offer, there was no doubt that HGTV had launched in South Africa with a bang!
